Advent 2019: Slow-motion surprise

Most of us enjoy a good surprise that happens upon us:  the surprise of an unexpected package at the door; the surprise of out-of-town friends who show up one day; the surprise of Christmas morning gifts. The rapid release of joy characterizes these kinds of surprises. But Advent is about a different kind of surprise. It’s about a slow-motion surprise, where anticipation lingers for decades, perhaps even centuries. And the resolution of the surprise comes in an unexpected manner. During this season of Advent, we explore how our longings for a world of justice, peace and love are a slow-motion surprise that anticipates the arrival of Jesus, the son of God.
