You might have heard a lot about the STEM Summer program in the last few weeks. Our prayer all along is that WCF would be invested and truly catch the vision for this program, as the WCF staff, missions team, and friends of the Amy Hunt Johnson Memorial Fund have seen it. We believe this education initiative is truly a service to the community around WCF and a way to honor the memory of Amy Hunt Johnson. You might remember that Amy was one of the top science teachers in DCPS!
I’d like to share a little bit with you about the exciting plans that Ragan, our program coordinator and Nazharie, our Co-Teacher have created for the program. Fifteen middle school students will come each week to learn about Space, Climate & Conservation, and how to use science to make an impact in our world. They’ll hear from an ametuer astronomer and Philip Chou about his conservation work. We have field trips planned from water testing in the Anacostia to exploring innovation in the Nation Museum of American History. They’ll create their own planets, sketch invasive species, do an experiment about coral reef bleaching, and launch rockets. It’s going to be a blast!
We would love your prayer for our launch next week. Pray for the students of STEM Summer Camp, that they will be engaged in the lessons and activities so they can learn and grow. Pray for great relationships with students, volunteers, parents, and staff to foster equity and community. Pray for WCF to embody well our values of social impact through this program and that our surrounding community would see our authentic desire to serve.
Peace of Christ to you,
Kate Lawson-Hedger
